Wean to Market Herdsman

The Wean to Market Herdsman works collaboratively in a team environment to provide daily, essential care for over 20,000 pigs, from approximately 3 weeks of age until marketing at 280-300 pounds. This role is vital to producing safe, high-quality pork and requires a mix of proactive animal care, environmental maintenance, and attentive handling.

In this role you should expect to:

Daily Care Activities

• Observe all pigs daily to ensure proper feeding, water access, and environmental conditions
• Identify and provide treatment to sick animals, moving them to hospital areas as needed
• Document environmental conditions and animal care activities accurately
• Maintain the external farm environment, including mowing and weed control
• Occasionally perform humane euthanasia for end-of-life care
• Ensure herd health by properly composting animal mortalities
• Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs on barn equipment to maintain appropriate environments

Receiving and Marketing Pigs

• Assist early pig care technicians with unloading and penning newly received pigs
• Provide any special care for new pigs as directed by early pig care staff
• Sort and load market-ready pigs (typically after ~4 months of care) onto trucks using proper animal handling techniques
• Adapt work schedules as needed for market pig loads, which may occur overnight (12:00 am to 6:00 am)
• Champion a safety culture and follow all company policies and procedures
• Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of work areas
• Other duties as assigned

Who you are

• At least 18 years of age
• Animal care experience preferred but not required
• Able to work weekend, holiday, and overnight shifts on a rotational basis
• Capable of working with limited supervision
• Dependable and detail-oriented
• Demonstrate independent decision-making skills in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Reliable transportation to a rural work location
• You must have a valid driver's license

Physical Requirements

• Able to lift 50 lbs frequently and up to 30 lbs repeatedly
• Comfortable working in all weather conditions (heat, cold, dust)
• Able to stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and walk for 8–10 hours per day
