Job Description

Job Description

Discover a private enclave of Mid-century bungalows on four lush acres just off Malibu’s iconic Point Dume. A property that once served as historic hideaways for wayfaring writers, musicians, and artists, Hotel June Malibu — originally the Malibu Riviera Hotel — has been a historic fixture off the Pacific Coast Highway since 1949. Today, its 13 airy, reimagined private Mid-century inspired bungalows offer private patios and garden views, each featuring original work by local artists and photographers. The property is also home to an indoor-outdoor cafe and bar serving casual takeaway Cal-Mex fare, and one of Malibu’s only hotel pools.

Position Overview

At Hotel June Malibu, the House Manager is a hands-on operational leader who brings together warm California hospitality with Proper’s elevated service philosophy. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic boutique environment, is passionate about hospitality, and can inspire and manage a small but powerful team across departments.

Reporting to the General Manager, the House Manager is responsible for day-to-day oversight of the entire property, ensuring smooth operations, team cohesion, personalized guest service, and consistent delivery of brand standards — all while embodying the laid-back luxury that defines Hotel June Malibu.

Core Responsibilities

  • Fluent in English with excellent verbal and written communication
  • Highly organized and proactive with strong leadership skills
  • Proficient with hotel systems (PMS, POS, labor scheduling, reporting)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail
  • Flexible to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
  • Comfortable leading a close-knit team with empathy and accountability
  • Passionate about sustainability, design, and thoughtful hospitality

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and perform physical movements across property grounds
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Comfortable with outdoor exposure and movement across uneven terrain (as Malibu is a coastal, nature-adjacent location)

Key Responsibilities

Property Operations

  • Oversee and participate in the day-to-day operations of the hotel, including Front Office, Housekeeping, Maintenance, and F&B coordination
  • Maintain service excellence in a small-format luxury environment, ensuring seamless guest experiences
  • Act as Manager-on-Duty and respond to operational needs and guest situations promptly
  • Enforce compliance with SOPs, safety regulations, fire codes, and brand standards

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead and inspire a multi-talented, cross-functional team
  • Conduct regular staff meetings, 1:1s, and coaching sessions
  • Handle recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, and performance reviews
  • Uphold a team culture aligned with Proper values, emphasizing care, accountability, and growth

Guest Experience & Community Relations

  • Be visible and accessible to guests — from morning greetings to late check-ins
  • Manage service recovery with empathy, urgency, and resolution focus
  • Stay attuned to the Malibu community and recommend thoughtful local experiences
  • Integrate seasonal activations, wellness events, or lifestyle programming in partnership with brand/marketing

Financial, Admin & Vendor Oversight

  • Assist GM in budget oversight, cost control, and vendor management
  • Monitor daily reporting and revenue performance; recommend improvements
  • Review invoices and timesheets for accuracy and process efficiency
  • Ensure supply ordering and inventory management is streamlined and cost-conscious

Strategic Planning & Brand Partnership

  • Liaise with central teams (Revenue, Sales, Marketing, HR) to align on business goals
  • Support the GM in executing brand initiatives, lifestyle programming, or media visits
  • Drive continuous improvement by suggesting enhancements to SOPs or offerings
  • Champion sustainability efforts and maintain a visually polished, environmentally conscious property
