Position Summary
The Environmental Justice (EJ) Organizer will work closely with frontline communities to build collective power, mobilizing Latine and allied groups to take meaningful action on climate and environmental justice issues. This role involves community outreach, volunteer-leadership development, coalition-building, and campaign execution on issues like
air and water quality, industrial pollution, climate resilience, and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
Community Engagement & Organizing
- Build authentic relationships with communities impacted by environmental harm
- Host between 10-12 workshops per year, lead skill building trainings, meet with community members and partners to raise environmental justice awareness, and empower impacted communities throughout the Greater Houston
- Engage, recruit, and develop community volunteers to strengthen their leadership and advocacy skills in support of lasting community empowerment
- Support resident-led campaigns that advance environmental justice goals
Campaign Development & Advocacy
- Listen and collaborate with community members to identify issues, develop strategies, and lead local advocacy efforts
- Conduct power-mapping and stakeholder analysis to influence policy change
- Engage in direct action, legislative advocacy as needed
- Stay up to date on relevant news and policy updates that intersect and impact environmental justice in Greater Houston
Coalition & Partnership Work
- Serve as the primary community liaison for MFA’s Environmental Justice program, representing the organization at events, engaging with community members, organizations, and coalitions, and submitting weekly reports.
- Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders and community partners to advance shared priorities and community-driven goals
- Coordinate joint actions, campaigns, and policy platforms with partners
Administration & Communication
- Report weekly on outreach activities, progress to goals, coalition updates, and events
- Contribute to newsletters, media talking points, and social media content related to EJ efforts
- Assist with event planning, logistics, and community mobilization as needed
- Manage multiple projects and responsibilities independently, while maintaining regular communication with team members and community partners
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage time effectively
- Solutions-oriented and proactive, comfortable asking questions and offering or receiving constructive feedback
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage across cultural and language differences
- Skilled in facilitating accessible, inclusive events, meetings, and trainings
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Must have reliable transportation
