Job Description

About the role

As Director of Finance Consulting, you will lead delivery of outsourced finance and controller services across a portfolio of mid-market clients (typically $10–30M revenue). This full-time, client-facing role combines hands-on controller responsibilities — cash flow management, AR/AP oversight, monthly financial close and reporting, and development of monthly metrics packages — with oversight of multiple ongoing projects and engagements. You’ll work directly with company owners to answer complex accounting questions, perform ad-hoc cost and variance analyses, and ensure smooth financial operations across clients, while mentoring and managing consultants as the practice grows. The role is mostly remote (Milwaukee area preferred) with occasional travel to client sites; we’re seeking a versatile, technically strong accounting leader (manufacturing and/or service experience preferred) who can thrive in a fast-paced, values-driven environment and take significant ownership of client outcomes.

What you'll be doing

  • Serve as the primary client-facing finance lead across multiple engagements (typically 10–30M revenue), regularly partnering with business owners and senior leaders to address strategic and operational financial needs.
  1. Own core controller responsibilities for each client: cash-flow forecasting and management, AR/AP oversight, bank and cash reconciliations, month‑end close support, and periodic check runs (including scheduled on‑site tasks as needed).
  2. Produce and present monthly financial packages and operational metrics dashboards; analyze variances, identify drivers of performance, and deliver clear, actionable recommendations to client leadership.
  3. Lead ad hoc finance projects — deep dives into cost drivers, accounting research for complex transactions, process improvements, and system or workflow implementations — and drive them through to resolution.
  4. Coordinate and manage work across multiple concurrent client engagements, prioritize competing requests, and ensure timely delivery of high‑quality outputs.
  5. Mentor and supervise consulting team members as the practice grows, delegating tasks, reviewing deliverables, and building internal capability to support client needs.
  6. Design and implement financial controls, standardized reporting, and repeatable processes that improve accuracy, efficiency, and transparency for client operations.
  7. Travel occasionally to client sites (primarily within the Milwaukee/Appleton area and occasional out‑of‑state visits) for on‑site meetings, hands‑on support, and relationship building; role is primarily remote with periodic in‑person requirements.

What we're looking for

  • Proven senior accounting/controller background (5+ years in a controller or senior finance role preferred) with deep technical knowledge of accounting principles, month‑end close, AR/AP, cash‑flow management and financial statement preparation.
  1. Comfortable as a client-facing advisor: able to communicate complex accounting issues clearly to owners and executives, lead client meetings, and build trust through timely, thoughtful recommendations.
  2. Experience working with mid‑market companies (roughly $10–30M in revenue), ideally in manufacturing and/or service industries, with the ability to adapt financial practices across different business models.
  3. Strong analytical and reporting skills — able to prepare monthly financials, develop KPI/metrics packages, investigate cost drivers, and translate data into actionable insights for clients.
  4. Excellent project and time management: proven ability to juggle multiple clients and concurrent projects, prioritize urgent requests, and switch contexts quickly while maintaining attention to detail.
  5. Leadership and mentorship capability — ready to oversee consultants and take on a director‑level role that includes supervising others, delegating work, and elevating team performance over time.
  6. High adaptability and problem‑solving mindset: comfortable with ad‑hoc engagements, hands‑on operational tasks (e.g., check runs, cash management), and working in a mostly remote setup with occasional local and regional travel.
  7. Strong interpersonal integrity and alignment with a values‑driven culture; cultural fit with the company’s mission is highly valued (candidates of all backgrounds welcome).

What you'll need

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required; CPA or CMA strongly preferred.
  1. 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience with at least 2–3 years in a controller or senior finance leadership role (or equivalent fractional controller experience).
  2. Proven experience supporting multiple clients or business units concurrently — comfort managing several projects, priorities and stakeholder relationships at once.
  3. Strong technical accounting skills (GAAP, month‑end close, reconciliations, complex accounting issues) and hands‑on experience with AR/AP, cash‑flow management and financial statement preparation.
  4. Experience building financial reporting packages, KPIs/metrics and forecasts for owners and executive leadership.
  5. Industry experience with manufacturing and/or service businesses preferred (experience across multiple industries a plus).
  6. Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with accounting/ERP systems (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage, or similar); ability to learn new systems quickly.
  7. Client‑facing communication skills: confident presenting to business owners, translating technical issues into clear recommendations, and responding to ad‑hoc information requests.
  8. Demonstrated leadership and supervisory ability — experience mentoring or managing consultants/finance staff and providing project oversight.
  9. Highly organized, adaptable, and comfortable with a variable day-to-day workload that includes recurring responsibilities and ad‑hoc projects.
  10. Mostly remote role; candidate should be located within a reasonable commuting distance of Milwaukee (roughly 30 miles) and able to travel occasionally to client sites (Wisconsin and occasional out‑of‑state travel).
  11. Alignment with the company’s values is important; comfort working in a faith‑informed, values-driven environment is a plus.
  12. Ability to pass reference checks; valid work authorization for the U.S.

What we offer

We’re a values-driven, client-facing finance firm offering a hands-on leadership role with autonomy, variety, and the chance to grow with the business.

  • Competitive base salary targeted around $120,000 (final offer commensurate with experience).
  1. $500/month health stipend in lieu of employer-sponsored medical coverage (flexible to use toward the plan of your choice).
  2. Mostly remote work with a preference for candidates within ~30 miles of Milwaukee; occasional on-site client visits and light travel (Appleton, Florida, and local client sites).
  3. Flexible paid time off—typically two weeks to start with opportunities to increase/accrue based on tenure and performance.
  4. Significant leadership opportunity: manage multiple client engagements, oversee consultants as the practice grows, and work directly with business owners.
  5. High-variety, high-impact work across mid-market clients (roughly $10–30M revenue) in manufacturing, service, and other industries—mix of recurring financial operations and ad-hoc strategic projects.
  6. Professional growth: exposure to complex accounting and controller-level responsibilities, mentoring opportunities, and direct influence on client outcomes and firm direction.
